With Meta’s controversial content moderation changes, many users are opting to leave its platforms entirely. If you’re ready to delete your Facebook, Instagram, or Threads accounts, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you securely download your data and deactivate or delete your accounts.

Step 1: Download Your Data

Before deleting your account, download your personal data to keep a record of your photos, chats, and activity.

For Facebook

  1. Log in to Facebook on a browser.
  2. Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
  3. Click Your Information on the left sidebar and select Download your information.
  4. In the Accounts Center, choose Facebook or other linked accounts.
  5. Specify a date range, file format (HTML or JSON), and media quality (low, medium, high).
  6. Click Submit Request.
  7. Once the request is processed, you’ll receive a notification to download your data.

For Instagram

  1. Open the Instagram app or website.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Your activity > Download your information.
  3. Select the account and specify the download destination (device or external platform).
  4. Choose your date range, format, and media quality.
  5. Click Create Files.
  6. Instagram will notify you when the file is ready, and you’ll have 4 days to download it.

Step 2: Delete Your Facebook Account

  1. Log in to Facebook and go to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
  2. Open the Accounts Center and navigate to Account ownership and control under Personal details.
  3. Select Deactivation or deletion.
  4. Choose the Facebook profile to delete.
  5. Select Delete account and follow the prompts to confirm.
  6. Note: Facebook delays deletion for a few days. Logging in during this time cancels the request.

Step 3: Delete Your Instagram Account

  1. Go to the Instagram website or app.
  2. Access Accounts Center > Account ownership and control > Deactivation or deletion.
  3. Select the Instagram profile and choose Delete account.
  4. Confirm deletion by following the prompts.

Step 4: Delete Your Threads Profile

  1. Go to Threads.net on a browser.
  2. Open Settings > Account > Deactivate or delete profile.
  3. Choose Delete profile and complete the prompts.
  4. Note: Deleting your Instagram account will also delete Threads.

Important Notes

  • Deletion Timelines: Facebook accounts are deleted after a few days, Instagram profiles after 30 days, and Threads profiles require 90 days for full deletion.
  • Reusing Usernames: After deletion, you may re-register with the same username if it’s still available.
  • Data Retention: Messages sent to others remain accessible in their accounts even after deletion.

By following these steps, you can securely manage your exit from Meta’s platforms while safeguarding your data and privacy.
